Search engine optimization is not only about meta descriptions, title tags, and keywords. It also involves creating quality content. Offering intriguing, compelling, and thought-provoking content increases the likelihood of your website ranking high on search engines. You may be thinking, “I can create content, no problem, but how exactly do I measure quality content?” Quality content can be pretty subjective to those of us who write and create it. To search engines, there are specific characteristics that qualify content as “quality” content.

Write for Your Audience

When creating content, do so with your specific audience in mind. If you’re unsure who your audience consists of, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Who am I speaking to when I write?

  • What does my audience like to hear from me right now?

  • Is there anything my audience has specifically asked me to write about or address?

  • Is my audience looking for specific solutions to individual problems?

  • Is my audience mostly female/male/millenials/mothers/business owners/etc?

Write Original Content

Not only does your content need to be created with quality in mind, it also needs to be original, which means it need to come from YOU. Whether you write the content yourself or hire someone else, always write with your brand, your audience, and your unique personality in mind.

Write Engaging Content

Stories, blog posts, and articles that actively engage your readers will enhance the content you include on your website. Do you tell stories that connect emotionally with your audience? Do you include calls-to-action at the end of your blog post?Do your articles challenge your customers to think differently about a specific topic? Engaging content not only produces active readers, it also leaves them wanting to learn more from you and your website.

Link to Trusted Sources

When conducting research, many people think it' perfectly fine to link to anything that supports their thoughts or ideas. Many times they don't take the time to check the source they have linked to in their content. A low-quality source, not from a trusted source or an expert website, can actually decrease your rankings in search engines. If you're not sure the source is 100% accurate or 100% credible, it’s best not to link to it at all.

Add Images and Video

Images and videos highlight your original content, making it stand out among the competition and giving it a more appealing interest. Follow these rules when using images or videos on your website:

  • Use smaller images. Larger images increase page loading time, which negatively affects your listing on search engines. Page loading speed is a very important factor among search engine rankings.

  • Use original images and videos. You can definitely use stock photos to enhance the content of your website, but adding original images and videos will increase your search engine rankings even more. Use an application like Canva to create blog post title images, infographics, image quotes and the like.

  • Add an original description to the Alt-Text. It’s true that images reinforce the message of your content. When adding those images, be sure to add descriptions to the Alt-Text section of those images. This will also increase the receptiveness of your website on search engines.

These recommendations are merely a few of the factors involved in creating SEO-friendly content. By following the instructions above you will begin to see a greater reach of your content on search engines.
