SEO or search engine optimization is the process of improving the search engine rankings of your website. Optimizing your website places your business in a position of authority on the world wide web. It also makes your website easy to find for those searching and looking for the products and services you offer.
Basically, SEO makes it easy for customers and clients to find you. This is the “business sweet spot” for all online entrepreneurs.
As online business owners we understand the importance of SEO but often do not understand how it works. Although there are many facets to improving the SEO of your online business, one of the major players is keywords.
Keywords convey the main focus of your website or online business as well as the products or services you sell. You can search for relevant and top ranking keywords through different online tools such as Google’s Keyword Planner.
How do you search for keywords related to your website?
Be Specific. Conducting your search using generic terms will not help improve your rankings. Be sure to use specific terms related to your business.
Use Similar Words. A travel agent will obviously use “travel” as a keyword to improve their SEO. They could also search for similar words such as “road trip”, “vacation”, “adventure”, and other words associated with travel.
Choose Short Phrases. When searching a keyword phrase, use only 3 - 5 words at a time. Don’t be afraid to mix and match different words. For example, if you search “bloggers for women” you could also search “women bloggers”, “blogging for women”, “blogs for women” and other related phrases.
Find Highly Relevant Keywords. Although you want words that have high rankings, you also want them to be relevant to your business. Do not simply choose a keyword based on its rankings. You will be using these keywords in your content so be sure they coincide with the focus and purpose of your website or business.
Where do you add these keywords on your website?
I recommend using the keywords or keyword phrases you have chosen in the following 5 places within your content.
- Page titles and Post titles
- Headlines within the content
- Body of the content and articles
- Images (use the ALT TEXT to add the keywords)
- Page URL
